Think Like a Monk : Train Your Mind for Peace and Purpose Every Day

Author : Jay Shetty

Publisher : Thorsons; FIRST EDITION (8 September 2020)

Paperback : 320 pages

This is a self-help book which helps us to control and train our brain for peace and purpose in life. While reading this book, we find the description of so many things that stop us from serving to the world. There is a very wide illustration of negativity and the ways to control it, take advantage of it. Then one of the chapters is on fear. We understand the origin of fear and the ways to overcome it.

As the title suggests train your mind for peace and purpose every day, so there is everything covered in this book which comes to us everyday and affects our thoughts every day. In the whole book author writes about finding our peace and training our mind to help finding our purpose every day. For this there is so much illustration on love and service through passion and purpose.

The book is compiled for the purpose to train the mind through monk mind while clearing every thought related to negativity, fear and overthinking. This concept we easily understand when author compares the thinking of two minds one is monk mind and another is monkey mind.

The author always took help of monk’s way of thinking while solving any of the problems we face. As the author choose by himself to be a monk so we will find everything genuine and get to know his experience every time what he learned from ashram.

The things that always fascinate me while reading this book is its exercises at the end of every chapter and the hand drawn figures to either understand something or to perform practical every time.

In this book we also find three type of meditation breathe work, visualisation and chanting. I found a breath work meditation very effective as we all know the importance of breath in one’s life.

Also the author cleared my doubt on meditation till now I thought that meditation can be performed only on calm, closed and quiet place where least disturbance may occur. But after reading this book I get a way to do meditation anytime and in any environment even while lying on bed.

I read this book in almost sixteen hours (not continuously). I personally never met any monk neither learn any thing from him. So it was a great book for me to learn so many things and get a view of how monks think. Even this book creates much impact on my way of thinking and the actions associated. I suggest for everyone, any age group to read and understand the book.

Through visualisation authors suggest so many events on which we can visualise. But the visualisation of ones own death is very horrible for me but it changed almost all my thought process and actions. After that the authors suggest to find one’s own regrets before the death so that he can make his life more meaningful and serve very well to the world. While reading this chapter in the book I was just stuck in my mind for a moment.

While moving towards end of the book we find a Vedic personality test. I took that test and thank God, I fall under the category of what I’m doing right now. It makes me very happy. I’m doing the right work that suits well with my personality. There is so many things related to Vedas and Bhagavad Gita based concepts as we all know this is the oldest system present in the world and in Indian culture. This system always shows a path to save humanity. It will definitely make everyone a better person and help in discovering soul journey. It will help improving our life, relationship services to others.

It is very easy to understand yet incredibly intense learning that will change our thought process. It can be a boon for everyone who is going through a hard time and struggling, will encourage and guide.

I wish everyone could eagerly crave to feed their mind through the monk way and gulp down so many beautiful insights present in this book and perform exercises suggest the end of the chapter.

People don’t usually care how much you know until they know how much you care. For anyone feeling slightly stressed or just want to look at things in a different perspective should definitely THINK LIKE A MONK.
