BOOK REVIEW: WHO MOVED MY CHEESE
Who moved my cheese is a book written by Dr. Spencer Johnson MD. Dr.Spencer Johnson, MD, is one of the world's leading authors of inspirational writing. This is a very thin book. I completed reading this book in almost three hours (not continuous).
In the book there are three sections. First is a gathering, former classmate talk at a class reunion about changes happening in their lives. Second is the story of who moved my cheese. This is the core of the book. Third section is a discussion. The classmate discusses what the story meant to them and how they are going to use this story in their profession or in other aspects of their life.
It is a story associated with changes in people’s lives. These changes take place in everyone’s life. Everyone is running in his maze. In the book cheese is a metaphor. It can be different for everyone like big house, car, job, relationship, money, freedom, health, recognition, spiritual peace etc. Everyone in the world is running in a maze to find his cheese. Everyone wants the cheese to be happy and to be successful in life. Here, maze is referred with the environment we are living in or a community we are working in etc.
In the story there are two mice and two little people. Their names are written below…
Sniff- one who sniffs all the opportunities and threats as they are approaching.
Scurry- one who scurries into action or take action immediately.
Haw- one who is reluctant to change at first but after seeing other better alternative decides to change.
Ham- one who is scared of changes and thinks something wrong might happen hence does not change at all.
The little people are smarter as usual and can do better than mice. But here we find that mice do better as they keep things simple and always ready to change. While the two little people have complex brains and their emotions complicate things. These four characters represent people’s behaviour and their psychology. You will find something new and useful in the book every time you read the book. It will help you; deal with the changes and approach success.
While reading the book we learn something that is written below…
-Change happens, they keep moving the cheese.
-Anticipate change; get ready for the cheese to move.
-Monitor change, smell the cheese often so you know when it is getting old.
-Adapt to change quickly the quicker you let go off old cheese, the sooner you can enjoy new cheese.
-Change move with cheese
-Enjoy change, savour the adventure and enjoy the taste of new cheese.
I must say it is a brief story that compels us to think who we are, which character suits us well. I read so many books and I found this book can be the solution to the most of the problems people are facing. Each and every line relates us and leaves a message for us. I recommend this book to everyone especially who are stuck in their life and want to something better.
