BOOK REVIEW: PARINEETA

Parineeta is a book written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhay. The book originally is written in Bengali. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay is a Bengali writer, he is from West Bengal. This book is based on social, class and religion.

I completed this book is almost four hours (not continuous). It is a very small book. I read this book in Hindi but the translation is available in some other languages also like, English, Marathi, and Guajarati.

The main character of the story is Lalita, who is on orphan girl, lives with her maternal uncle. Her maternal uncle is Gurucharan, who is a bank clerk but has very less salary. Gurucharan has five daughters. He took a loan from his neighbor Nabin Roy to marry all of his daughters for this loan; he mortgaged his home for this loan.

Nabin Roy is a businessman. He has two sons only. His wife is Bhuvaneshwari. His younger son is Shekhar. Lalita calls Bhuvaneshwari as mother. Bhuvaneshwari loves Lalita and helps her in every need. Shekhar is a lawyer, he has a law degree. He used to go office. They are best friends from childhood. Lalita also adores him as a mentor. She also accepts his possessive attitude towards her.

They both unintentionally put garland to each other on a very special day. From that time they became serious for their relationship. But they do not tell about their unintentional wedding.

Nabin Roy is very clever who wants to marry Shekhar with a girl who is from wealthy family.

As the time passes, Gurucharan got ill and doctors advised him to live in a different environment. So he along with his family; relocated to Munger. But he did not live many days there. He died and also Nabin Roy.

Gurucharan’s family came back to Calcutta to sell the old home. At that time Shekhar came to know that Lalita refused to marry. She felt that she is already married with Shekhar. Knowing this Shekhar broke his marriage plan. He told everything to his mother Bhuvaneshwari. His mother feels it difficult to break marriage plan which is fixed for Shekhar. But she loves Lalita, she agrees with both and gave blessing to them. They now accepted each other. Shekhar accepted Lalita as his wife.

The book is very interesting. I did not feel a perfect translation of this book. Everyone is introduced well and had a wonderful role. We also read about the old games and problem of a typical and middle class family.
