BOOK REVIEW: SPUTNIK SWEETHEART

Sputnik sweetheart book is written by Haruki Murakami. Originally it was published in Japan. It was later translated in English by Phillip Gabriel.

While roaming around book market, I just picked and read some pages. It seems quite good and very simple bread. I searched on internet for this book and I find that it is one of the best sellers. It has good rating on google reviews. I bought the book.

It is a novel based on love story. Sumire is a writer. She spent what she get from family stipend. She had a friend written in the book as ‘K’. K is a school teacher. He is the novel’s narrator and protagonist. He loves Sumire. She didn’t share much of her feeling with K.

Sumire went to attend a wedding once. She met a Korean woman. Her name was Miu. She was seventeen year elder to Sumire. They both had a long conversation. Sumire attracted towards her. For Sumire it was first time when she did not limit herself and attracted sexually. Miu offered a job to Sumire. She accepted the offer and keep on working for her. Sumire also started changing her lifestyles. She wore good quality clothes. She lived in a luxurious apartment. She quits smoking. With all this, she forget to write something.

Sumire wrote letters to K from Europe. In one letter she told him that she and Miu going to spend more time. They are going to Greek island for vacations.

K got a surprising call from Miu. She asked him to fly to Greece as something happened to Sumire. K reached Greece. He met Miu. She told him that Sumire was missing from some days; she even did not left any trace.

Miu left the island and reached Athens. She wanted to take help from Japanese embassy. She also called Sumire’s parents. K was in the island.

After some days K returned to Japan and he started his normal life again. One day he received a phone call. It was Sumire. She tells him that she was in the same phone booth near her apartment from where she used to call. She asked him to come to get her.

Sputnik sweetheart book lacks clear ending. Haruki Murakami was born in Kyoto in 1949. He now lives in Tokyo. He has written so many short stories, novels and nonfiction. His books have been translated in more than forty languages.
