BOOK REVIEW: THE ELEMENT OF STYLE

The Elements of Style

Author : William Strunk Jr. , E. B. White

When I was in school I used to write for my diary. It taught me something about writing. I focused on grammar rules and sentence structures that time. This book is for style on creative writing. I read this book in four hours not continuous.

There are so many things in the book that helps us in so many ways in our writing but this is an old book most of the examples are outdated. The language is also an old one. The philosophy of writing and some suggestions given are as relevant now as it was in older days.

I picked this book as it is known as Bible of writing. The most famous authors say that it is the best book to inculcate style. Anyone who has passion for writing should read this book.

Most of the things written in this book are old when, it was first published in 1959 but now people neither talk like that nor write in that way. The book is filled with grammar rather much with writing practises. A beginner writer needs an explanation with examples to make his writing believable. But in the book there is no practical example to understand the concept clearly.

As the title suggest element of style, it barely define the style but more on grammar. It describes consistent writing, how to use comma! Where to use italics! Or quotation marks! But anyone who read AP style or Chicago style manuals, he will be more enormous in writing. These manuals cover everything that pertains to writing and rendering into print media.
