Luminous essays on translation and self-translation by the award-winning writer and literary translator
Translating Myself and Others is a collection of candid and disarmingly personal essays by Pulitzer Prize–winning author Jhumpa Lahiri, who reflects on her emerging identity as a translator as well as a writer in two languages.
With subtlety and emotional immediacy, Lahiri draws on Ovid’s myth of Echo and Narcissus to explore the distinction between writing and translating, and provides a close reading of passages from Aristotle’s Poetics to talk more broadly about writing, desire, and freedom. She traces the theme of translation in Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks and takes up the question of Italo Calvino’s popularity as a translated author. Lahiri considers the unique challenge of translating her own work from Italian to English, the question “Why Italian?,” and the singular pleasures of translating contemporary and ancient writers.
Featuring essays originally written in Italian and published in English for the first time, as well as essays written in English, Translating Myself and Others brings together Lahiri’s most lyrical and eloquently observed meditations on the translator’s art as a sublime act of both linguistic and personal metamorphosis.
About Author
Jhumpa Lahiri teaches creative writing and literary translation at Princeton University, where she is director of the Program in Creative Writing. A writer in both English and Italian, she is the author of Interpreter of Maladies, which won the Pulitzer Prize, and the editor of The Penguin Book of Italian Short Stories. She has translated three novels by Domenico Starnone into English.

Hi, I'm Keshav, and my life is screwed. I hate my job and my girlfriend left me. Ah, the beautiful Zara. Zara is from Kashmir. She is a Muslim. And did I tell you my family is a bit, well, traditional? Anyway, leave that.
Zara and I broke up four years ago. She moved on in life. I didn't. I drank every night to forget her. I called, messaged, and stalked her on social media. She just ignored me.
However, that night, on the eve of her birthday, Zara messaged me. She called me over, like old times, to her hostel room 105. I shouldn't have gone, but I did ... and my life changed forever.
This is not a love story. It is an un-love story.
From the author of Five Point Someone and 2 States , comes a fast-paced, funny and unputdownable thriller about obsessive love and finding purpose in life against the backdrop of contemporary India.

Author: Sri M
Print length: 320 pages
Release date: 18 July 2022
Price: 398.00 (price may vary)
Review
In this tell-all autobiography, Sri M writes about his fascinating journey as a young man from the southern coast of India to the mystical Himalayan Mountains. At the age of nineteen and a half, he felt an irresistible urge to go to the Himalayas in quest for his great Master. He finally met his Master at the Vyasa Cave, beyond the Badrinath shrine. After spending three and half years with his Master, wandering freely across the length and breadth of the Himalayan ranges, he was instructed to go back to live in the plains and lead a normal life. He started working for a living, fulfilled his social commitments and prepared himself to teach others all that he had learned and experienced. This book reveals the spiritual journey of a young lad from Kerala, who by his sincerity and dedication evolved into a living yogi. Sri M shares his knowledge of the Upanishads and spiritual insights born out of first hand experiences in his autobiography. Apprenticed to a Himalayan Master will make for an engaging and riveting read for those interested in the life and teachings of Sri M.
This is an astounding book replete with miracles, meetings with masters, description of higher levels of consciousness and spiritual attainment. It is a rather strange tale. -- Dr Karan Singh, Tribune News Service
Sri M is an enlightened soul, a Guru whom I met years ago. Sri M is very accessible.... I wish he would take me as a disciple but I will have to wait for another birth when I am more evolved. -- Maneka Gandhi, Mathrubhoomi
Whether or not you are a skeptic, this beautifully produced book makes for compelling reading. And, hey, the author is around, if you want to grill him about the harder to believe elements in the book. -- The Herald of India
The autobiography deals with transformation of Mumtaz Ali Khan into Sri M as he went on acquiring profound knowledge of the Upanishads, deep personal insights and a higher level of consciousness. Descriptions on the beneficial effects of yoga, meditation and metaphysics are fascinating. Sri M is often termed as modern day Kabir Das. -- The Hindu
It is prophetic that he will use the name 'Sri M', which will remind him of his Babaji Maheshwarnath, who comes across as the "great master, wise, powerful and loving". The book is, in fact, a tribute to him. For anybody who has interest in mysticism, Sufism and Vedanta, Sri M's autobiography is, indeed, a treasure-trove. -- The Organizer
What stands out about this book is that its narrative exudes a sense of wonder, for the author often uses the word 'strange' to describe his experiences. Some of the instances that he recounts challenge your sense of belief and disbelief so much, that you don't quite know what to believe. But a little deeper reading, however, renders more meaning to the narrative than is apparent at first glance. He deals easily and honestly with the mistrust between religions just as he also shows how these boundaries can melt away. -- 'Speaking Tree', The Times of India

8. Leadership: Six Studies in World Strategy

Henry Kissinger analyses how six extraordinary leaders he has known have shaped their countries and the world
'Leaders,' writes Henry Kissinger in this compelling book, 'think and act at the intersection of two axes: the first, between the past and the future; the second between the abiding values and aspirations of those they lead. They must balance what they know, which is necessarily drawn from the past, with what they intuit about the future, which is inherently conjectural and uncertain. It is this intuitive grasp of direction that enables leaders to set objectives and lay down a strategy.'
In Leadership , Kissinger analyses the lives of six extraordinary leaders through the distinctive strategies of statecraft which he believes they embodied. After the Second World War, Konrad Adenauer brought defeated and morally bankrupt Germany back into the community of nations by what Kissinger calls 'the strategy of humility'. Charles de Gaulle set France beside the victorious Allies and renewed its historic grandeur by 'the strategy of will'. During the Cold War, Richard Nixon gave geostrategic advantage to the United States by 'the strategy of equilibrium'. After twenty-five years of conflict, Anwar Sadat brought a vision of peace to the Middle East by a 'strategy of transcendence'. Against the odds, Lee Kwan Yew created a powerhouse city-state, Singapore, by 'the strategy of excellence'. Although when she came to power Britain was known as 'the sick man of Europe', Margaret Thatcher renewed her country's morale and international position by 'the strategy of conviction'.
To each of these studies, Kissinger brings historical perception, public experience and - because he knew each of their subjects, and participated in many of the events he describes - personal knowledge. The book is enriched by insights and judgements such as only he could make, and concludes with his reflections on world order and the indispensability of leadership today.
Do individuals matter in shaping the course of events? Henry Kissinger thinks they do, and in his latest book he draws on case studies and his own experience to argue that the individual leader, and his or her statecraft, can sometimes determine history ... Although Kissinger, now aged 99, has not held office since 1977, he has advised virtually every US president since Nixon... For Kissinger, good leaders have a deep appreciation of the past and an ability to imagine possible futures ... Elder statesman is an overused term but Kissinger is the genuine article, and worth listening to. -- Margaret MacMillan ― Financial Times
As he heads towards his century, Kissinger has lost none of the intellectual firepower that set him apart from other foreign policy professors and practitioners of his and subsequent generations. -- Niall Ferguson ― Sunday Times
Yoda for foreign policy geeks -- Andrew Anthony ― Observer
The 99-year-old Kissinger has written what purports to be a handbook for the leaders of today and tomorrow, built around six portraits of global figures from the second half of the 20th century: Konrad Adenauer, Charles de Gaulle, Nixon, Anwar Sadat, Lee Kuan Yew and Margaret Thatcher. Kissinger draws interesting parallels between them. All six lives were shaped by what he calls the Second Thirty Years War - the period of global conflict from 1914 to 1945. ... Kissinger knew them all and enlivens his text with accounts of his own interactions with the leaders and those around them. ... informed and authoritative -- Jeremy Cliffe ― New Statesman
They all triumphed over their modest starts in life, through their great ability and drive, to reach the pinnacle of power. All of his six subjects, Kissinger argues, show that "transformative leadership" by great people matters more than impersonal forces in shaping history. -- Phillips O’Brien ― The Times
authoritative... given the pitiful state of leadership in the western world today, a few of those already in high office would lose nothing except, perhaps, their idiocy by reading it. -- Simon Heffer ― Daily Telegraph
There is no denying his intellectual potency ... this tome is a robust study of six leaders who he asserts 'transcended the circumstances they inherited'. ... he makes shrewd comments about the way in which leaders operate today in an era dominated by social media and identity-based factionalism. -- Piers Brendon ― Literary Review

9. LIES OUR MOTHERS TOLD US: The Indian Woman’s Burden

Savitribai Phule, Mahasweta Devi, Amrita Pritam, Medha Patkar, Kamla Bhasin, and countless others have, since the nineteenth century, fought for and won equal rights for Indian women in a variety of areas-universal suffrage, inheritance and property rights, equal remuneration, prevention of sexual harassment at the workplace, and others. Pioneering feminists believed that due to these hard-won rights, their daughters and granddaughters would have the opportunity to have rewarding careers, participate in the social and political growth of the country, gain economic independence, and become equal partners in their marriages. On paper, it would appear that the lot of Indian women in the twenty-first century has vastly improved but, in reality, the demands of capitalism and the persistence of patriarchal attitudes have meant that they continue to lead lives that are hard and unequal, especially when compared to their male counterparts.
Indian women are among the most overworked in the world-they spend on average 299 minutes on housework and 134 minutes on caregiving per day, shouldering 82 per cent of domestic duties. They are burdened with work from such a young age that many are forced to drop out of schools, leave the labour force, and give up dreams of financial independence. For those who have the privilege of choosing to have a career, the only way they can make this viable is by doing the 'double shift': women are expected to do most of the housework, childcare, and caregiving, whether they have jobs or not.
While these problems apply to all women across the country, those in India's middle class face an altogether unique challenge because middle-class families have mastered the art of simulating an environment of empowerment in their homes. Lies Our Mothers Told Us: The Indian Woman's Burden takes a close look at the gender inequality that forms the bedrock of India's middle class-this forces women try and be 'superwomen' while ignoring the deleterious effects on their mental and physical health. Using available data and anecdotal evidence from the real lives of Indian women across the country, journalist Nilanjana Bhowmick asks if, in our patriarchal society, the assertion that 'women can have it all' comes at too high a price.
About Author
Nilanjana Bhowmick has been a journalist for more than twenty-one years and has won three international awards for her reports on gender and development. She began her career as a producer for the BBC Asian Network in Birmingham and The World Today, the flagship current affairs programme of the BBC World Service Radio based in London. She was the correspondent for TIME magazine’s South Asia bureau in New Delhi. She has written for the Washington Post, Al Jazeera, and National Geographic Magazine. Her non-fiction work, poetry, and short stories have appeared in several international anthologies.

Review
The book did two things for me. It made me realize I didn't have to be a perfect person first to love myself, and it made me start loving myself from the first 15 minutes. I didn't think it was possible so early, ... what had I done but read a few chapters, but I had been trying to love myself from the outside in and not the inside out. There is something fundamentally different about his approach which is easy to start, makes actual physical sense, and can change the way you feel and view the world. Read it, and pass it along. This is one book everyone of us knows a friend who could use a quick shot in the arm to put them back on the right life track.
I read the "I know how you feel" book and purchased it as a gift for my friend's birthday then I saw this book and noticing the author's postcard thing I jumped and ordered it for her. This is so going to be a hell of a worthy gift. She has been battling with some emotional issues and I believe this will alleviate her a lot. Moreover, the author signed postcard is going to blow her mind. She reads at least 10 pages a day while commuting so the daily letters and that too 60 in total would cheer her up. This is to date the best decision I've made.
I have read the previous 2 books written by the author and loved both. But I love this book even more. This book makes you feel how much the author has grown as a writer and more importantly, as a person. So, he is the right one to write a book about it.
While reading this book, I underlined words now and then because I was like..
"Okay, this makes sense!"
"This is what I have felt! I am not alone."
"I have been through this or someone I know is going through this!"
"Yes, I should try this. Maybe this will help!"
"Oh, I should look out for these signs!"
"I wish I knew this sooner."
"I needed this reminder."
It's such a beautiful book! Well-written, empathetic, considerate and insightful. I loved the second part "Building lasting relationships" which covered Day 13 to Day 23. And the suggestions that the author has offered at the end of each letter are really helpful. Can't wait to try those ideas/exercises.
If you are going through a dark phase, struggling with low self-esteem, heartbreak or feeling unloved/stuck/lost then this book is definitely for you.
If you are happy and contented, still I'd suggest you - give it a read for it'll serve as a reminder and will come in handy if ever needed in future. In terms of money and time spent on reading this book, it's worth the investment!
