BOOK SUMMARY: SPUTNIK SWEETHEART


Sputnik sweetheart book is written by Haruki Murakami. It is originally published in Japan. It is translated in English by Phillip Gabriel.

Sumire is a writer. She used to spend her family’s stipend. Her friend and the male narrator of the book who is also a protagonist is known as K. He is a school teacher. He loves Sumire. She didn’t express her feelings.

One day Sumire was invited in a wedding. There she met a Korean woman. Her name was Miu, she was seventeen years old to her. They had a conversation over there. Miu offered her a job. Sumire accepted this offer. She after working in the job changed herself. She wore good quality clothes. She lived in a spacious apartment. She quit smoking. These all things lead her in writer’s block.

Some days passed, Sumire missed K and she thought to send him letter. Sumire also wrote in the letter that she and Miu planned to spend some more time on a Greek islands rather than staying on home during vacation.



Sumire and K used to have conversation on phone. One day surprisingly, K received a call from Miu. She told him that something happened to Sumire. K took a flight and reached to Greece. He met Miu. She told him that Sumire vanished without any information. Miu went to Athens. She left the island. She took support from Japanese embassy and called Sumire’s parent.

K again started his normal life. One day K received a phone call, the other person told him that she is in a phone booth near her apartment. She used to call him from this phone booth. K rushed to meet her.
