Why Consistency Is Key to Creative Writing
Writing is a journey, unlike others it also need small steps to start with and learns to move in a great pace that can make us a great writer. In this journey anyone can start but with some good practises we can make it easy to stay in this journey and to become a great writer.
I started writing for my blog in 2013 during my college days. That time I did neither have any schedule nor any niche to write on. I kept on writing in my diary or in my FB page but not regularly and the consequences lead me to deactivate my blog.
In 2018, I again activated my blog and passionately started writing for it. But this time I started writing enthusiastically, with more reading, with more motivation and moreover with a schedule for writing.
Here are some tips that helped me get back to my blog and on writing as well…
1. Have Plan for writing
This is the first step towards writing. Most of the writers plan everyday before they start writing even for small projects. This is the beauty of writing that we can plan anywhere, anytime to write for; we can plan for what we want to write on, how we want to write, why we want to write for, where we want to write etc. that we can plan in advance.
In my last attempt, I wrote whenever I find time or did not write so many days or so many months. Now I read that blogs and find them very boring and lacking quality in the language and in the writing skills as well.
This time I improved my language and writing skills in a better way. I did this through reading a variety of books and practise writing consistently.
In the starting of day, I plan for writing even for a shorter time period but I do it every day. To be a better writer we should dedicate time to plan for our writing.
2. Follow Routine
Any work or skill can be practised to its best level when it is done in a routine, it is done every day. Some people write every day and some write weekly as per their job and lifestyle. I prefer to write in weekend, as weekdays are my regular job. It does not matter much to write once in a week or twice in a week but write at least something without much interval. We should make and follow a simple routine that can work forever.
The great writers believe in setting a word limit for per day to follow consistency. Stephen King, the most famous bestseller author; suggests a limit of 1000 words initially to be a great writer. This word limit will not only maintain consistency but also push you to write and accomplish per day goal.
Consistency to be maintained not only in accomplishing daily or weekly word limit but it should also be maintained in your niche and in style. Your audience may not enjoy your writing if you keep on changing your niche or style like, today you write about travelling, next day you write about movie reviews and another day you write about finance & investment. You decide what you really care and passionate to write for, choose that niche and stay glued to it.
From past two years, I’m writing aggressively. Sometimes due to my professional job, I do not get much time but I do care the ideas I think for and do not take risk to lose it. So I either write that idea is short in my phone or record this idea whenever I am busy or travelling. This preserved idea I use to write whenever I stuck in writers block. I regularly write in weekends so I do not ruminate much on what to write or how to write but through my preserved idea I start writing. And just at weekend, I have to ensure that I accomplish my goal of writing at least two projects or more than 2000 words. It makes me accountable to maintain consistency in my writing and make me moving in the journey of being a great writer.
Amazing writeup to learn writing and follow consistency ... great work
