BOOK SUMMARY: DEEP WORK
Deep work book is written by Cal Newport. The book has made me approach work and exciting life with so many new thoughts. It also clarifies the true effects of time wasters on our minds. It also motivates us to consider what we would be capable of what we do with our time and for this our attention is extremely important.
Focus is much more rigorous than we perceive. If we do not develop the most demanding of all disciplines, self discipline we will flounder and wonder why.
Cal Newport’s writings are drawn away by mental prompts to check email, text a friend or get a bite to eat. Most of the CEOs are tempted mentally to check the lunch room while attempting deep work, no one is exempt.
We can develop superior self discipline while we can increase our focus. We should start small. We should try to focus tightly for 3 to 5 minutes.
We should increase our stamina to master 3 to 5 minute range. One become conditioned to sit and to do deep work for up to an hour at a time.
The author told there are so many people who sit and write for 4 hours and think nothing of it. The people have the stamina for it. They are conditioned for the task. They were not born with this ability. They are developed and cultivated the unique ability overtime.
So, start now and start small. Anyone can do it. It is more a question do you want to do it? Are you motivated to start and commit to a goal of 20 minutes of highly focused, uninterrupted deep work?
“Deep work is a skill.” Cal says. To master this skill we need immense practice and effort. The ultimate outcome of this skill is focus. Deep work requires the ability to focus on a single task for an extended period of time, which can be challenging for some people. If one find that one has difficulty sustaining one’s focus for more than few minutes, deep work may not be the best productivity strategy for one.
One thrive on collaboration and social interaction, deep work is often a solitary activity which can be challenging for people who thrive on collaboration and social interaction if one find that one is more productive when one is able to bounce ideas of others or work in a team environment, deep work may not be the best productivity strategy for one.
The effectiveness of deep work will depend on our individual preferences and working style. If we find that deep work is not beneficial for us. There are many other productivity strategies and techniques that we can try to help stay focused and productive.
