BOOK SUMMARY: ON WRITING
On writing is a book written by Stephen King. It is one of the best books on writing. There is almost everything to become a writer. Here are some lesson I learnt,
Stephen King writes everyday even in holiday. He writes almost six pages a day and then starts his day.
He practices continuously to craft the writing skills. But his writing was hampered due to his accident and he was not able to write for a few weeks. We should take up a craft and practice when we feel like it and expect to become good writer. Discipline and continuous effort is essential for success in any field.
Stephen King was rejected so many times before his first book was published. He took his rejection letters and nailed them to a wall.
If you want to become a writer, you must read. Stephen king things it is joke that people want to become good writers, but don't want to read. I recommends that you should read as much and write as much.
Writing is not about making money, getting fames, getting dates, getting laid or making friends, writing is magic, as much as the water of life as any other creative art.
Whether it is a vignette of single page or an epic trilogy like, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ the work is always accomplished one word at a time. This is similar to Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird. The fundamental building blocks of expression and communication are not sentences, scenes, ideas, images or even phrases, they are words. The words arrive in the reader one at a time in their precise sequence. And what we write comes from us a word at a time. If we treat our writing differently, we risk the piece becoming a referent to something invisible and secret in our heads.
When you write a story, you are telling yourself the story, when you rewrite, your main job is taking out all the things that are not the story. Writing is a balance between expression and communication. To really work, it has to be something that comes authentically from you and that resonates meaningfully with someone else. So Stephen King tips are somewhat helpful, but it buys into somewhat suspicious assumptions that you do one and then the other that they are somehow different tasks. He says the magic is in you.
This book is first half of autobiography or as he writes and the second half is how to manual for aspiring writers, filled with practical advice on grammar and story structure.
