2. Faf Through Fire: An Autobiography

Print Length: 384 pages

Release Date: 15 May 2023

Price: ₹364.00 (price may vary)

Review

Faf through Fire is far more than just a book about cricket. It is the story of a man who happened to play the sport at the highest level.

This brutally honest, fascinating, introspective work provides a unique insight into the mind and heart of one of South Africa's most interesting and charismatic cricketers. There is the public persona-the tattooed, fashion-conscious, mentally tough, immensely popular and yet, at times, misunderstood Du Plessis. And then there is the authentic Faf. It took him years to connect with this side of himself, but when he did, it shaped his relationships with people and, ultimately, his captaincy of the Proteas.

In this book, Du Plessis lays bare the story of his growth, from a youth with a questionable moral compass outside of cricket to a leader known for his integrity, values, honesty and empathy for his teammates. He reflects on how influential leaders, such as Gary Kirsten, Stephen Fleming, Doc Moosajee, Graeme Smith, A.B. de Villiers, Owen Eastwood, Russell Domingo, Ottis Gibson and M.S. Dhoni, helped mould him into a man who leads with grit, purpose and a love of people. He also explores the destructive relationships, offering his perspective, in devastating detail, on his final years of international cricket. Neither the changing room nor the boardroom is off limits in this no-holds-barred account.

About The Author

Francois 'Faf' du Plessis is a professional cricketer and former captain of the South African national cricket team. He is considered to be one of the best fielders in the game and among the best all-format batsmen of his era. He is also regarded as one of the most tactically astute and successful captains in all formats of modern cricket. Faf was named as the South African Cricketer of the Year in 2019. His Indian Premier League (IPL) career kicked off in 2012, when he played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He went on to play for CSK for four years, followed by two years with Rising Pune Supergiant, after which he returned to CSK for another four years. Faf became captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL in 2022 and was captain of Joburg Super Kings in the first edition of the SA20 league in 2023.

AN OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB SELECTION

'One of the best books I've read in my entire life. It's epic. It's transportive . . . It was unputdownable!' Oprah Winfrey, OprahDaily.com

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water follows a family in southern India that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning - and in Kerala, water is everywhere.

At the turn of the century a twelve-year-old girl, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this poignant beginning, the young girl and future matriarch - known as Big Ammachi - will witness unthinkable changes at home and at large over the span of her extraordinary life, full of the joys and trials of love and the struggles of hardship.

A shimmering evocation of a lost India and of the passage of time itself, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding, and a humbling testament to the hardships undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. Imbued with humour, deep emotion and the essence of life, it is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years.

4. What I Learned About Investing from Darwin

Author: Pulak Prasad

Print Length: 304 pages

Release Date: 6 June 2023

Price: ₹4,763.36 (price may vary)

Review

Pulak Prasad offers a philosophy of patient long-term investing based on an unexpected source: evolutionary biology. He draws key lessons from core Darwinian concepts, mixing vivid examples from the natural world with compelling stories of good and bad investing decisions-including his own.

In his wonderfully original and insightful book, Prasad makes a compelling case for the science of evolutionary biology informing the art of investing. From red deer and silver foxes to green frogs and dung beetles, he draws upon the work of Darwin and others to colorfully articulate many of the investment principles that have driven his remarkable success. -- Peter Ammon, CIO, University of Pennsylvania

I had the privilege of working with Pulak for nearly a decade. There are great investors and great minds: Pulak was always an unusual combination of both. His book brings both of those elements together―an architecture of investing that he has practiced for decades with great success―but constructed in an unusual way by comparison to phenomena in the natural world of evolutionary biology. The result is a fascinating and highly enjoyable experience that reminds us of the often simple answers to complex questions. -- Chip Kaye, CEO, Warburg Pincus

Pulak Prasad is proof of Charlie Munger’s adage that great investors thrive on multidisciplinary thinking. He has written a highly enjoyable and thought-provoking book that is a master class on both investing and evolution. -- Seth Alexander, president, MIT Management Company

What I Learned About Investing from Darwin conveys important lessons and concepts for those interested in disciplined, long-term investment. Prasad's writing is engaging, charming, and stimulating. -- Robert Wallace, CEO, Stanford Management Company

About The Author

Pulak Prasad is the founder of Nalanda Capital, a Singapore-based firm that invests in listed Indian equities and manages about $5 billion. He was previously the cohead of India for Warburg Pincus, a global private equity firm, and worked at the management consulting firm McKinsey for several years.
